Places to visit: Château de Rochechouart

Château de Rochechouart is 20 minutes from us, and worth a visit. Built in the 13th century, the château is located at the top of the Grêne and Vayres. Near to the site of an asteroid landing – which you can still see evidence of today.
Aymeric VI (1170-1230) built the current castle, of which the keep and the entry châtelet remain. In 1205, his wife Alix, accused of adultery by the intendant of the castle, was locked up in the lion’s cage in the east tower. The animal did not devour her but lay down at her feet instead. She was cleared and the intendant was thrown into a cage, where he was eaten soon after. Justice?
Rochechouart is a beautiful Château and once you’ve had a look around, stop in the village for a spot of lunch – plenty of lovely cafes and restaurants nearby.
